Extreme Accounting
In my previous existence as a teacher, the school I taught in used to organise a careers event over a two day period. Members of various professions would talk for up to 90 minutes to the older students and offer an informative insight into their working lives.
A teacher would be allocated to each session to ride shotgun, make sure someone proposed a vote of thanks, and sometimes wonder if they were in the right job.
On one occasion it was my lot to sit in on an accountant, who began his presentation by saying “Most people think accountants are very boring people, but I am here to assure you otherwise……”
What followed over the next 90 minutes is probably best left to a diplomatic silence but suffice to say there was not a noticeable drift from the attendance at the Royal Navy to Accountancy in the next session. It may be because the Royal Navy always had the good sense to send a couple of very attractive wrens to the all boys school that I taught at, I don’t know……..

List of accounting software online and on the web
When we first started Clear Books in July 2008 we thought we had hit on a great idea with our online accounting app. We still think that, but we are not alone…
There is nothing new about accounting software. Indeed, accounting itself can be traced back to 1494 and the father of double entry bookkeeping, Luca Pacioli.
We thought we were on to a winner with our online concept. Needless to say, a little market research soon showed that we were not the first to have the idea. Indeed, every day I seem to stumble across a new face and here they are:
Importing Alliance & Leicester Bank transactions
Here are some instructions for importing transactions from an Alliance & Leicester business bank account into Clear Books. A&L provide several ways to do this, and I am going to talk about the two main methods that Clear Books supports.
The first way is the preferred method as it get’s the most detail from your bank statement, however you can’t do it for periods longer than 56 days at a time. I would advise that you break up your downloads into files covering one month at a time.
Invoice numbering and prefixes
Clear Books has two broad categories of invoices: Sales Invoices and Purchase Invoices.
When using Clear Books you will mostly deal with invoices prefixed INV and PUR. INV represents a Sales Invoice you send to a customer. PUR represents a purchase you receive from a supplier. Although a supplier will use its own invoice numbering system, Clear Books uses the PUR prefix to identify an invoice as a purchase as well as to uniquely identify the invoice in Clear Books.
Data export tool
Whilst we know that most people will be perfectly happy using the Clear Books reporting system to view their accounting data, there will always be some who need to export the data to another system for one reason or another.
For example: you may be working with an Accountant who is a bit of an IT Dinosaur, and is still using Sage or something similar to produce their clients’ accounts. Or, you may be one of those people who just loves wading through raw data in a spreadsheet. In either case, you will find our export tool useful.
