We spoke to Michaela Pleskova from Revolut\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.revolut.com\/IDiyHPNPO7\"><em>Business Bank Account<\/em><\/a><em> team, and asked her to break down who needs a business bank account.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you work for yourself, get a business bank account<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at what the law requires of you. If you\u2019re setting yourself up as a sole trader, you aren\u2019t required to have a business bank account. If you\u2019re setting yourself up as a limited company you are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the time though, even the smallest of sole traders will benefit from setting up a dedicated business bank account. So if you\u2019re asking whether you need one, the quick answer is \u2018just do it\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business bank accounts can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Quick to set up<\/li><li>Free<\/li><li>A great way to understand your business finances<\/li><li>An essential tool to prepare for tax time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s simply no reason not to get yourself set up with business banking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can set up a business bank account in minutes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for a business bank account provider (like <a href=\"https:\/\/link.revolut.com\/IDiyHPNPO7\">Revolut<\/a>) who offers a bank account with quick online application and a \u2018free\u2019 or \u2018starter\u2019 account plan. These accounts can be upgraded to a more fully featured account if and when your business starts to grow, but should cost you nothing in the short term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And remember, if you decide that working for yourself isn\u2019t for you, you can simply close your business account without incurring any costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You\u2019ll understand your business finances better<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To put it simply, there are two types of business transactions you will make. Money in and money out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Money in<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you make money, get your customers to pay you into your business bank account rather than your personal account. If you have an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clearbooks.co.uk\/tour\/invoicing\">online accounting software<\/a> like Clear Books, you can link your accounting software to your online banking to quickly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearbooks.co.uk\/blog\/how-to-track-invoices\/\">match \u2018money in\u2019 transactions with invoices<\/a>. That way, you\u2019ll have a clear view of what invoices are paid, and which customers you still need to chase for payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Money out<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you spend money for your business, use your business bank account. They usually come with a Mastercard or Visa Debit Card to make transactions easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to see all your business expenses in one place and you can classify your transactions using online banking or your linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clearbooks.co.uk\/tour\/purchases\/\">online accounting software<\/a> to track each bill or receipt. Some of these will be deductible at tax time (saving you money you would otherwise owe in tax).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get in a muddle when your personal and business transactions are all made in the same account. By setting up a business bank account, you\u2019ll understand your business finances much better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be ready for tax time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you work for someone else, they pay your tax to HMRC for you. When you work for yourself, you need to keep tax money aside throughout the year. At the end of the year, you\u2019ll then complete a self assessment for HMRC. Self assessment calculates the amount of tax you owe, and usually results in a bill you need to settle with the tax man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you set up a separate business bank account, you\u2019ll know exactly what you\u2019ve earned (\u2018money in\u2019) and what expenses you\u2019ve incurred (\u2018money out\u2019). Remember \u2018money in\u2019 minus \u2018money out\u2019 equals the pre-tax profit you\u2019ve made. A great rule of thumb is to keep some of the profit (say 20 or 30%) in your business bank account for tax time.
