{"id":8270,"date":"2011-03-03T15:50:26","date_gmt":"2011-03-03T15:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.clearbooks.co.uk\/?p=8270"},"modified":"2011-10-16T18:50:07","modified_gmt":"2011-10-16T18:50:07","slug":"limited-company-director-do-you-know-what-your-take-home-pay-could-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clearbooks.co.uk\/blog\/limited-company-director-do-you-know-what-your-take-home-pay-could-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Limited company director &#8211; do you know what your take home pay could be?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Many of you may be operating your own<\/strong><strong> limited company.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It might be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Just      you on your own <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You      and your partner \/ spouse <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You and employees<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One thing is sure \u2013 you have a company to<strong> earn a living<\/strong> and build a business.<\/p>\n<p>So how much can you pay yourself?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salary<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From April 2011 you can pay a salary of \u00a3589 \/ month without paying any tax or NI.<\/p>\n<p>At this level:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You      do get National Insurance Credits towards some benefits e.g. pension<\/li>\n<li>You      do have to register as an employer and complete employers annual returns<\/li>\n<li>You      do not have to pay any tax or national insurance<\/li>\n<li>This      is a perfectly legal and acceptable way of paying yourself from your      company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Dividends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the tax efficient ways to operate*as a shareholder of a limited company is to pay anything over and above the salary as dividends.<\/p>\n<p>A dividend is the distribution of<strong> \u2018after tax profits\u2019<\/strong> so it is essential that the company has sufficient retained profits to pay a dividend.<\/p>\n<p>If this rule is not followed then the dividend could be viewed as an unlawful distribution of the company\u2019s funds.<\/p>\n<p>No additional income tax** is due on dividends received where the total income of the person is below the higher rate threshold.<\/p>\n<p>The higher rate threshold from April 2011 is \u00a335,000.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming that you have no other income at all, you can pay a divided from the company of<strong> \u00a331,866<\/strong> before you pay any additional income tax.***<\/p>\n<p><em>Other income covers interest received, rental income received, additional dividends etc<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Total<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On an annual basis you can pay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>salary      of \u00a3589 \/ month = \u00a37,068 \/ year<\/li>\n<li>Net      dividends from the company of \u00a331,866<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total \u00a338,934<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*subject to your specific circumstances. We recommend you check with your accountant that this is best for you. This is a guide only and should not be relied upon for your tax planning.<\/p>\n<p>**Corporation tax has been paid on the company profits at 21% until 31 March 2011 and 20% from 1 April 2011. So whilst the above is free from additional income tax, corporation tax has been paid on the profit where profit = income less costs (the salary is an allowable cost).<\/p>\n<p>***Calculation for dividend \u2013 here is the maths!<\/p>\n<p>Personal allowance \u00a37,475<\/p>\n<p>Higher earnings threshold \u00a335,000<\/p>\n<p>Gives total income of \u00a342,475 before additional income tax is due<\/p>\n<p>Salary of \u00a37,068 leaves gross dividends of \u00a335,407 to be paid<\/p>\n<p>Net dividends (the amount paid from the company) \u00a335,407 \/ 100 * 90 = \u00a331,866<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many of you may be operating your own limited company.
