For self-employed taxi drivers

MTD for Income Tax for taxi drivers.

High gross fares, the vehicle expense decision, plate and licence fees, radio-circuit costs and a mix of cash and card. Here's how Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to taxi drivers, and when it starts.

Does this apply to me?

Gross fares, not profit, decide it.

MTD for Income Tax is measured on gross income before costs. With fuel and vehicle costs high, taxi drivers reach £50,000 of fares sooner than the take-home suggests.

Check your gross first

Your take-home hides how big your fares are.

Because so much of your income goes on fuel, insurance and the vehicle, your gross fares are much higher than your profit. MTD tests the gross figure, so it's worth checking where you stand.

Common questions

Taxi driver MTD FAQ.

Do taxi drivers have to use MTD for Income Tax?
If your gross fares are over £50,000, it applies from 6 April 2026. Because the threshold is measured on gross income, many drivers are in scope even when profit is much lower. It drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
Should I use the mileage flat rate or actual costs?
You can claim a flat rate per mile or your actual running costs plus capital allowances. It's usually one or the other for a vehicle, so pick the method that suits you and keep the records. Your accountant can help.
What can I claim as a taxi driver?
Depending on your method, typical costs include fuel or mileage, hire-and-reward insurance, plate and licence fees, radio-circuit fees, servicing and vehicle finance.
I take both cash and card, how do I record it?
Both are income. Card takings and any app payments plus your cash fares all go in your records, so your gross income is complete for each quarter.
Is my income really over the threshold?
Quite possibly. The threshold looks at gross fares before costs, so drivers cross it earlier than expected. It's worth adding up your total gross fares for the year, before any costs come off, to check where you stand.
