The basics

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's plan to move tax online. It requires you to keep digital records and report to HMRC through compatible software, instead of on paper or in a single annual return. Here is what that means for you, in plain English.

MTD at a glance

  • It is HMRC's programme to digitise tax reporting.
  • You keep digital records and file through compatible software.
  • MTD for VAT is already live for VAT-registered businesses.
  • MTD for Income Tax is now live for the self-employed and landlords, starting with income over £50,000.
