Please tell us a bit about yourself

I’ve been working in marketing communications for several years and decided early on to specialise in PR and media relations, although I do other things like writing and business consultancy.  I’ve been fortunate to represent some of the biggest brands in the world, especially in the world of technology, but I get a real kick out of working with start-up, early stage and fast growth companies.

 

What will you be speaking about at the Clear Books Community Exhibition?

I’ll be talking about the art of PR and how it can be used successfully to promote small businesses.  Most small companies don’t have the large budgets of their bigger counterparts and PR can be a really effective way to punch above their weight.  Although PR can and should be planned, it’s also a very spontaneous and fluid art that can work wonders if you know how to make the most of it.

 

What are you most looking forward to on the day?

I’m really interested in innovative businesses and the UK has become a hotbed of innovation, especially SMEs that have the creativity to break moulds and do things differently.  On the day I’m looking forward to meeting people and companies that have new ideas and fresh challenges.

 

What’s your favourite piece of business advice?

I’m not really sure that I have one, but there is this saying that I like:

A farmer berates his dog for being unable to catch a chicken.  ‘Correct’ said the dog, ‘but there is a subtle difference in motivation.  I was running for my dinner— he was running for his life.’

For me this sums up what innovative small businesses are all about.  A lot of the time they have different motivations to big businesses because they are hungry for success, they can be more nimble and agile than much larger companies.  Plus I keep chickens, they are very clever and they fascinate me!!

 

Why should small business owners book their ticket to CBCE now?

The CBCE is a unique proposition in that it really is an opportunity for businesses to come together, talk about themselves, learn about others, share their ideas and pick up some really useful tips.

 

What’s your favourite thing about Clear Books?

What I like about Clear Books is that it’s a highly innovative company that involves its customers in the development of its own business.  A lot of companies are prescriptive about how they operate and how they develop their products – Clear Books has customers as the heart of its community and that to me is what CBCE will be all about.
